I’ve always insisted that your MP rating on your digi-cam is NOT important because most people don’t print anything larger than a 8×10 … in fact, there are FEW people who even print those.
Save your money – go for features, ease of use, and cost. ForGET the MP rating – it’s useless unless you’re printing posters.
Well, I found a table on the Walmart Photo Center site that says exactly that ….
Recommended Resolution for Photo Center Prints and Products The table below lists the minimum recommended image resolutions. Resolution is listed in megapixels (MP). We always check the resolution of every photo during checkout. If we think the photo isn’t large enough to produce a quality image, we’ll let you know. You can still print these pictures, but the picture quality may not be up to your standards or expectations.
MINIMUM RECOMMENDED RESOLUTION Prints 4 x 6 540×360 pixels 5 x 7 546×390 pixels 8 x 10 960×768 pixels Wallets 546×390 pixels Posters Poster: 11×14 1260×990 pixels Poster: 12×18 1620×1080 pixels Poster: 16×20 1800×1440 pixels Poster: 20×30 2700×1800 pixels Cards 4×8 Greeting Card 1024×768 pixels 5×7 Greeting Card 1200×900 pixels 5 x 6 640×480 pixels 4.25×6 Postcard 900×638 pixels Books 4×6 Flipbook 540×360 pixels 5×7 Flipbook 546×390 pixels Hard Bound Memory Book Cover: 1639×1233 pixels Pages: 1280×1024 pixels Soft Bound Memory Book 1280×1024 pixel Individual Mini Memory Book 580×435 pixel Photo Gifts Notebook 480×480 pixels Notebooks (with full photo cover) 2625×1950 pixels Notepad 370×370 pixels Stickers (20) 525×525 pixels All other items 900 x 600 pixels
And there you go …. for a normal 4×6 print, your photo needs to be ONLY 540×360 pixels!!! How does that translate to the MP ratings? Not entirely sure myself, but let’s just say that even the LOWEST MP rated camera out there can give you a 800×600 photo (in fact, I think I read somewhere that most of them now give you 1024×768 at the smallest).
