Working from home – not a pipe dream after all

A bucket load of stuff has happened between the last blog post and today. Basically, to summarize it into a sentence “I got not one but TWO online jobs“.

One of my long-time online blog friends sent me a link on Twitter when she saw me talking about browsing job postings. It led to an advertisement that was old and likely already filled, but I soldiered on and applied anyway. You never know what can come of an application to a position that is filled but the advertisement is still up.

As I suspected, the position WAS filled, but the poster was looking for other talent and based on my application thought maybe I would be perfect for the job.

Oh – I was SO excited … SO excited that I lost sleep Thursday into Friday morning waiting with breath held for news of the details of this position he wanted to fill. Lost sleep Friday (and incidentally missed my yoga class cos I was passed out on the couch), lost sleep Saturday (cos I was just …. excited), lost sleep Monday (cos I was talking to my new boss) … well, you get the picture.

While all this was going on, I stumbled onto the kgb_ website. Now, the name is unfortunate in my mind. MOST unfortunate. That a U.S. company would deliberately use a name like that worried, but intrigued me. So I took their challenge. Well, the challenge was fun, the tests and training were fun … but after I aced all their tests and passed through into being a “Special Agent” and actually went to work, I found that while a no-brainer job, it was NOT going to be challenging me and in fact was going to demotivate me … fast. I ditched after 5 hours work. For 5 hours, all I earned was US$3.50. And that is because I tend to be methodical and thorough, which makes the potential for earning more quite high … just not for me.

In any case, the number of hours I was going to have be putting in was going to interfere with “the other job” … and I didn’t want that. I wanted to dedicate ALL my time to “the other job” … because it has FAR more learning and advancing potential for me as a techie and a geek.

What is “the other job” – you ask? I am essentially the assistant website manager for a team. The site? Well, I shall keep that hidden for now – at least until the position is cemented. Essentially, I am going to be moderating forums, approving articles and authors, helping build newsletters … stuff like that to start with. And while it isn’t going to make me rich, it will (a) keep me occupied, (b) earn me a little extra dough, and (c) hopefully open up some alternative avenues to learn and maybe even earn later on – who knows.

I am still excited – and I spend every day eagerly anticipating the work. And the best part about it is that I can start work anytime, work until whatever time and interrupt work to go finish the laundry if I need to and if the workload permits. I can even stop and go to my yoga class in the middle of the day if I want to. So long as I make up the time later.

Dream job, you say? Maybe. :) All I know is that I am all smiles from my head down to my toes.
