The way one thing leads into something completely different…

I decided I was going to read instead of watching more NCIS (as much as I love it, there is just so much NCIS I can take at once). So I turned on the standing lamp right over my head on the couch and settled in to read … only … it was still dark.

Now, it’s a 3-way lamp, so I turned it again and the bulb blinked on and I realized that one of the filaments in the bulb was blown. I turned again and darkness descended once more … leaving me with the corrected view that not 1 but 2 filaments were blown in the bulb. (Ooo – prep school education coming in handy there – filament: a conducting wire or thread with a high melting point, forming part of an electric bulb or vacuum tube and heated or made incandescent by an electric current.)

Course, as luck would have it, I have only fluorescent bulbs in the house… so I wondered whether I could fit a 1-way fluorescent bulb into a 3-way socket.

Being who I am, I google’d it and found that as long as the wattage was below the max recommended for the lamp, all that would happen is that the bulb would only turn on at the middle click. No explosions, no dramatic bulb blowing … no drama – full-stop.

While I was at it, I decided to google some more to answer the question as to whether there was such a thing as a 3-way fluorescent bulb. (Which, of course, there is. I am not the first person to have these ideas and questions, remember?)

And while I am reciting all of this to my friend … it occurs to me just how unlike the rest of the world I am…

I have a question, I google it … chances are I can’t have been the first person ever to have had the question in the first place and furthermore, if I WAS the first person to ever have had the question, I could patent the idea and make my millions.

A startlingly large number of women would probably have sat around crying about a blown bulb… or just gone to buy another. (I have a book waiting, I can’t afford to spend another 40 minutes driving to go BUY a bulb when I have at least 4 perfectly good fluorescents sitting here…)

Hell … I wonder whether would any of them be looking for a bulb to READ in the first place.

Or am I just being cynical and snobbish now?
