Reflecting on 2009 and pondering 2010

I don’t make new year’s resolutions. I stopped doing that back in college when I realized I could scarcely remember the resolutions much less keep them. A couple of years ago, I read an article that encouraged a different strategy – it included reflection on the year past with a view for change in the year to come. Coincidentally, one of my blog subscriptions posted “Annual Review: Reflection and Setting Intentions for the New Year” which included a document with a list of challenging questions.

Considering it’s sort of in line with my usual strategy, I thought I’d actually do my review of sorts online this year and share with you all. Maybe something about what I say, do or think might help you guys in some way … I do at most 3 per question in the interest of space but the lists are by no means definitive.

What did you love last year?

  • earning and feeling useful
  • watching Nala (our kitten) grow up and begin to cement her personality

What went incredibly well?

  • not getting as sick as I did October 2008
  • coped with having to quit a good job, moving house for 3rd time in 2 years, driving halfway across the US from KY to TX and coping with all the stresses associated with the move.

What did you dislike?

  • having to move at all
  • realizing how much this new home reminds me of all the things I despise about Jamaica

What were some of the challenges you faced?

  • money
  • a winter ice-storm, at best 30 degree weather and no electricity (i.e. warmth)
  • husband, 2 kittehs and myself in a hotel room for an indefinite amount of time at the end of a long drive cross-country

What goals were important to me that I did not reach? Why?

  • saving – too many needs to fulfill
  • getting out and making friends – while I have made friends, I am not getting out as much as I had wanted to. I need exercise and external input. I think sitting at this computer all day every day is bad for me and my health… maybe. :)

What did you accomplish last year? What successes were you most proud of?

  • making it to one year of marriage with no skid marks whatsoever
  • making a home 2 times over

What are some of the things in last year that you want to duplicate this year?

  • WRITING! and more of it!
  • keep the skid marks off my marriage

What were some of the most important decisions of last year for you?

  • switching to iPhone’s and AT&T from Nextel – while not perfect, the experience is far more rewarding for us both
  • working at tax return preparation – it helped me understand the process and prepared me in a lot of ways for the working world here

What are some of the big and little things that you want to do or accomplish this year?

  • finish my book
  • cope with hubby’s deployment
  • get fit – already working on this with yoga classes

What liberates me? How do I work best?

  • silence – I need it to recuperate, meditate and ruminate :)

I left out a couple of the questions simply because some of them felt repetitive and because … really … this is all I want to examine at right now.

Well, that was a little exhausting just re-reading all of that … what about you guys? Anything you wanna share?
