For the last 2 or 3 days, there has been a broken water main at the end of our street – where it meets the main road. For that long, water (good water too) has been pouring unchecked into the road at a steady pace. On day 1, there were workmen digging, but they didn’t stay long, and they left a large hole filled with water until today.
This morning, a much larger crew arrived on scene and started digging again. I didn’t really pay much attention to them until hubby said he was on his way home for lunch. It was then that I realized they had shut the water off almost completely. There was a trickle but I wasn’t sure it was not just residual. The point is that for the first time in 3 days, the water was shut off for them to work on the main. That alone was surprising to me.
Next up, I decided to take a walk and check the mailbox and see if I couldn’t get a feel for what the problem was from the guys standing around. Well, colour me shocked when THEY approached me as I walked down the road … on the opposite side. They were apologetic – over and over – while they explained to me that it could be minutes of hours until they got the issue sorted.
What amazes me about this whole thing is this:
- water has been flowing unchecked from this broken main for 3 days now
- they haven’t shut the water off once in 3 days until today
- THEY were apologetic and eager to tell me ALL about it
If I was unsure what country I was in before now (possible, considering the heat, insects and terrain), there ain’t no doubt in my mind now. This is NOT Jamaica.

That's insane. No way would that happen in Colorado or here in Georgia. Texas is it's own little (big?) world over there. Oil is more important than water. I remember that happening in Colorado just right down our street from where I lived. It wasn't 10 minutes after the water came a gushing that a crew was there fixing it.

They were saying that it was a much larger problem than just a broken pipe though – so maybe that's why? /shrug
The debate was whether to put a band-aid on the problem or fix it. I hope for all our sakes that they fixed it. Water was off long enough for that anyway…
