current affairs anyone?

I’ve been giving this latest conundrum a lot of thought … the one where we (Jamaica) have a couple of parliament members with supposed US citizenship. It was my father’s thought that sparked my own.

He said that the matter is simple: if there is ever a dispute between Jamaica and the US that these people are involved in, on which side would they come down on? …considering that treason is punishable by death in the United States.

I took it further in my thoughts … because seriously, has ANYone even considered the potential fallout from a situation like this? Think about it – Jamaica establishing relations with Cuba for agricultural and educational benefits … who’s to say that the US might just decide that since we have their citizens as part of our government that we now become an enemy of the US due to our association with Cuba and withdraw their diplomatic presence here? Think about it: the embassy closes up shop, work visas revoked, visitor’s visas revoked, visa applications automatically denied, our country’s name goes on their standard declarations … “Are you, or have you ever been associated with the following countries: Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, North Korea, Jamaica ….”

Or how about they decide to target these dignataries (and I use the term loosely here) and extradict them and prosecute them …. just because they can?

Or how about putting pressure on our government to perform certain acts to alleviate the betrayal that these dignitaries have perpetrated?

So ok, I am no politician, diplomat or lawyer … but it seems to me that no good can come of a situation like this … how right am I?

With stating categorically that fear is no reason to act, I have to ask whether the potential fallout is worth it?

For Goodness Sakes, Bruce – DO SOMETHING before it is too late.

Am I the only one who sees this? Am I over-reacting? Come on people – throw me a bone here.

/sigh
