the .: fyr :. light

We turned in early last night because honey-sunshine is on the early shift. The problem is that the night before I had gone to bed late so I was sleepy all day yesterday and literally gave into it and slept most of the day away. Result? Couldn’t sleep when I needed to. So I got up and decided to check out this show called Bones on TNT. It stars the guy who used to play Angel – the vampire with a soul. After that was done, an episode of Cold Case started and while I am watching that, the sound gets completely blacked out and after 30 seconds of that, this voice comes up and tells me that a severe weather alert has been issued for the area and that I need to tune my TV to some station or other. Course, I ignore that and head for the computer – yea? Flood and tornado watches all over the state. At that moment, wind picks up outside. I look outside and it’s ominous out there. Heavy wind and the sky looks like hell done gone and got installed right here on earth.

While I am here looking at the red tornado watch markers on weather.com, my adopted-sis is in panic mode cos of some database issues on her site. So we talk about that fer a bit, and then I share my fear with her. She gets worried too. Then just as we are trying to discern the meaning of what I am seeing (remember, I am a complete newbie up here), the power goes out.

Ya. Can you spell panic?

Ok … I didn’t quite panic. Stumbled around and grabbed the flashlight I know is nearby, grabbed my ass and ran with it between my legs all the way into honey-sunshine’s armpit whimpering in fear. He wakes up and goes “Crap the power is out”. I am like “Erm, and that’s only HALF of it” and we start talking about the tornado watch. He’s not in the least bit worried, but I am still scared as hell. I text muh sis and tell her the power went out. She writes back …. oh I forget what she writes back and says. So I call her and we continue to talk about what I am seeing outside and after about 15 minutes of her telling me what it should look like if it’s tornado ready, what to listen and watch for and what to do, we both conclude that it might not be as imminent as I had feared.

You see, unlike a hurricane watch which means the experience of hurricane force winds within 48 hours (i.e. a certainty), a tornado watch just means that the weather conditions are right for the development of tornados. It just means a heads-up. It doesn’t mean gather your ass and head into your storm shelter. And this is the gap in my understanding – or was at any rate. Now I know. This morning when we are both less panicky or sleepy, he tells me that we would have had warning. I can’t say how or why, but I am satisfied that we would have had warning. I feel better.

So I get up and decide I am going to jailbreak my iTouch. I guess the geek in me hasn’t died in the face of housewife-status. So here I am jailbreaking and it’s kinda fun even though I have NO idea what’s going on in the background, and it’s a little unnerving not knowing … I am excited to see if it works. One of the things I have realized after having the iTouch for almost a week is that the unbroken firmware is VERY boring and NEEDS a network connection to be of any use. Unless of course you’re listening to music … in which case, just get an iPod Classic, eh? The iTouch and iPhone is for geeky forays into the world of wonderful OTM apps. I mean seriously … it’d be REAL nice to be able to play solitaire or some other game on my iTouch without having to head to a web page to do it.

And that’s the basic thing right there – without jailbreak, anything you want to do on the iTouch you have to do via Safari.

Well, so far so good. No problems once I got the right firmwares downloaded. The first attempt was with the iPhone firmware which of course failed. Now I have all the correct firmware and am currently attempting to upgrade my JB’d 1.1.2 iTouch to 1.1.3 JB. We’ll see how that goes.

Anyway, as the sky is beginning to brighten, I think it’s time for me to grab me some breakfast and settle down to some gaming … I haven’t done any serious gaming in a couple of days. Time to get moving.
